Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)
A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is an ultrasound of the heart taken from a probe swallowed into the esophagus (food pipe) and placed behind the heart. The patient is sedated for this procedure. The esophagus is located right behind the heart. By placing the ultrasound probe in this position, the nurse can obtain very clean pictures of the heart.
